Minister of Works, David Umahi, has criticised the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his frequent use of the phrase, “go and verify.”

Umahi disclosed his displeasure in a video that went viral on Wednesday, saying he does not like hearing Obi use the expression when speaking about his records, policies and claims concerning governance.

The minister was reacting to Obi’s practice of asking Nigerians to independently scrutinise and confirm statements he makes, particularly those relating to governance, public spending, development and his record in office.

“I hate hearing this statement he always makes, ‘go and verify,’” Umahi said.

Obi has consistently used the phrase “go and verify” while challenging members of the public to examine his claims using available records, documents and other sources rather than accepting them without scrutiny.

He has often presented the approach as an invitation for Nigerians to subject his claims to independent verification, particularly when discussing his tenure as governor, the Nigerian economy, public finances and various policy decisions.
