The Federal Government is taking steps toward announcing a new national minimum wage as part of efforts to ease the financial difficulties confronting Nigerian workers.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamil Shoretire, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja.

He spoke at a capacity-building workshop organised for labour correspondents.

Shoretire confirmed that consultations were ongoing as the government and relevant stakeholders work toward fixing a date for formal negotiations.

“We are yet to announce the timetable for that, but background discussions are already ongoing.

“When it’s time to get the press involved in what has been proposed and what is being negotiated, it will be revealed to you,” he said.

The permanent secretary also disclosed that the government was holding discussions with workers in sectors where disagreements over salaries and allowances had yet to be resolved.

The development comes amid growing pressure from organised labour for a review of the existing N70,000 national minimum wage approved by the Federal Government in 2024.

Workers have been pushing for the minimum wage to be increased to N500,000, alongside a demand for an immediate wage award.

The labour groups have also called for a reduction in the price of petrol to N500 per litre as part of measures to cushion the impact of rising living costs on Nigerian workers.
