Women from the Mushere community in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, took an extraordinary step on Thursday, April 16, 2026, by staging a naked protest in response to the removal of their traditional ruler, the Mishkakam Mushere, Julius K. Diblang, by the state government.

The Plateau State Ministry for Chieftaincy Affairs announced the monarch’s removal, citing the ongoing insecurity in the chiefdom and allegations of his involvement in certain conflicts. He was also accused of failing to address violent attacks, leading to accusations that he was betraying the community.

However, many residents of the chiefdom have defended the dethroned ruler, claiming that his removal was an unjust action, arguing that he had worked tirelessly to restore peace and bring displaced people back to their homes.

Supporters of the former monarch have described the government’s decision as a misstep, especially during a time of active security concerns.

Since his removal earlier in April, several groups have protested, calling for his immediate reinstatement, but the most striking protest was the naked demonstration staged by the women of the community. They marched to the council secretariat, carrying placards that read “Bring Back Julius Our Chief,” demanding the government reinstate their leader, claiming that his removal has caused instability in their community.

A widely shared video of the protest showed elderly women completely naked, marching through the streets, singing solidarity songs, and voicing their discontent.

One of the protest leaders explained to journalists why they chose to strip as part of their demonstration. She stated that they wanted to send a clear message to Governor Mutfwang that his decision to remove the monarch was wrong, emphasizing that he had worked hard to restore peace in the area.

“We had to remove our clothes to protest and demand that our paramount ruler, Mishkakam Mushere, Julius K. Diblang, who was unjustly removed from office, be reinstated immediately.

“This is a message from us to Governor Caleb Mutfwang that he should return Mishkakam Julius Diblang immediately or a big calamity will befall him. The world has seen our nakedness, and those who understand these things will know that you don’t take a woman’s nakedness for granted.

“Governor Mutfwang should better listen to us and bring back Mishkakam Mushere before it’s too late,” she said.
