A fatal shooting on the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) campus early Sunday morning has left the university community in shock. According to a statement from ECSU, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m., prompting a campus lockdown and shelter-in-place order.

The university’s statement expressed sadness and concern for the victims and their families: “The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all members of the Viking community affected by this tragedy.”

A person close to the investigation confirmed that at least one person was shot and killed, while two to three others were transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Centre for treatment. The source added that all but one of those individuals had been released from the hospital

ECSU campus police, along with state and local law enforcement agencies, are actively investigating the situation. The university has increased patrols and assured the campus community that there is no current threat.

As the investigation continues, ECSU is offering counselling services for students, faculty, and staff. The university has also made arrangements for meals to be served at the K. E. White Graduate Centre, with shuttle services provided.

The incident occurred on the final day of Viking Fest, an annual week-long event that included Yardfest celebrations and a spring football game. The university’s statement emphasized the safety and well-being of the campus community as its top priority
