Security operatives in Katsina State have apprehended a man over allegations of altering expired powdered milk and distributing it to unsuspecting consumers in Funtua Local Government Area.

The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, explaining that officers attached to the Makera Police Division carried out the arrest following actionable intelligence.

He revealed that the suspect was arrested on June 14 while allegedly transporting 10 bags of powdered milk suspected to have exceeded their shelf life and considered unsafe for human consumption.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly blended the expired milk with authentic products, repackaged the mixture in counterfeit packaging materials and sold them to unsuspecting members of the public.

Police authorities stated that the seized products have been preserved as exhibits, while the suspect remains in detention as investigations continue.

Sadiq-Aliyu noted that the suspect would be prosecuted after the completion of the ongoing investigation.

He explained that the alleged acts violate Sections 152 and 154 of the Penal Code Law 2021 (as amended), which criminalise the adulteration and sale of harmful food and beverages.

“The suspect is in custody as the investigation proceeds. He will be formally arraigned and charged in a court of competent jurisdiction upon the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, cautioned traders and business operators against engaging in practices capable of endangering public health and safety.

He also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious commercial activities to the nearest police station.
