Three women in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, had a ritual with a traditional healer that turned what was supposed to be a spiritual cleansing retreat into a terrifying night.

According to Pamela Bako, Shillah Mabvudzi, and another woman who goes by the name Talent, a traditional healer named Sekuru Sinaro led them to a mountain in Goromonzi for a purification ritual. They were told to consume, bathe in, and wash their hands in herbal combinations once they arrived. But according to the women, the ritual soon became frightening and disturbing.

After the sangoma left them in the hands of two male aides, Pamela told H-Metro, she heard the men discussing them in whispered tones in what she perceived to be a menacing and sexually provocative way.

“We were told to bathe and look into a mirror in a dark room while the two men watched,” Pamela said. “Sekuru left us with them, claiming he would return later. But one of the aides started making comments like ‘Sekuru can pay your rent,’ and I felt something was terribly wrong.”

Around 7 p.m., the women, some of whom were without clothing or possessions, escaped into the nearby forest after sensing danger. Eventually, Pamela returned to Harare after making it to the main road while carrying her baby. It was terrifying. “I’m sorry I ever went there,” she remarked.

After her escape, Shillah showed up half-naked and in need of assistance at the door of Apostle Blessed Mugwambeni’s house. At first, fearing the worst, the apostle and his family were participating in a prayer vigil against witches.

“We were about to sleep around 11 p.m. when we heard her calling for help,” said the apostle. “Given the timing and her appearance, we thought it might be a spiritual attack. But after hearing her story, we gave her clothes and tried to take her to the police.”

However, the lack of female officers at the station and the alleged refusal of male cops to step in hindered their attempts.

Shillah apologized for not departing sooner, stating that the lack of women in the temple had initially caused anxiety.

“We wanted to leave, but the men blocked us. We had no choice but to run. I lost my phone and other belongings.”

Chitungwiza residents are furious about the tragedy, which has also prompted new questions over the security of spiritual practices involving traditional healers. Authorities have not yet declared any arrests or launched an official investigation into the situation.
