A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has stated that military action alone will not be enough to eliminate banditry in Nigeria.
Okechukwu made the observation on Sunday while praising the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, for acknowledging the limitations of relying solely on military operations to tackle banditry.
Ribadu spoke during a brainstorming session on addressing banditry, organised by the Sokoto Advancement Forum in partnership with the Centre for Peace Studies at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
In a statement he personally signed, Okechukwu, a former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), described Ribadu’s position using the local expression “Gbaam,” an emphatic way of expressing agreement.
He emphasised that military operations must be supported by efforts to build trust within communities, protect farming and rural livelihoods, and prevent young people from being recruited into criminal networks.
According to Okechukwu, these measures are essential to complement security operations and achieve lasting results in the fight against banditry.
