The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, is now holding a conference in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss foreign affairs following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Niger Republic from the organization.

The ministers are anticipated to discuss Senegal’s widespread protests that ensued from the suspension of the nation’s presidential elections.

Dr. Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, announced that the three nations’ notifications of withdrawal and broader implementations will be discussed during the meeting.

According to ZINGTIE, the three West African nations under military rule said on January 27 that they would be leaving ECOWAS immediately, citing the organization’s growing threat to its members.
