France head coach Zinedine Zidane has ruled out the possibility of former Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema making a return to the national team.
The 54-year-old manager, who acknowledged his strong admiration for Benzema, said his current priority is to give younger players opportunities with Les Bleus.
Zidane recently unveiled his squad for the September international break, with France set to take on Turkey and Belgium in UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Asked whether Benzema could return to the squad, Zidane told the media ahead of his first games as France manager, “I spent extraordinary years with him [Benzema] in Madrid. I adore him. He has played for France.”
He added, “Right now, I need to see younger players with the national team,” he said.
Benzema’s most recent appearance for France came in a 2022 Nations League encounter against Croatia.
