Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has questioned who would be willing to initiate dialogue with Boko Haram insurgents and armed bandits, citing previous peace efforts undertaken by former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in the Niger Delta.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Gumi recalled that Jonathan visited militant camps in the Niger Delta creeks, while Osinbajo also held engagements with the groups as part of initiatives that later resulted in programmes designed to restore peace in the region.

According to him, any attempt to adopt a similar strategy by opening discussions with Boko Haram fighters and bandits would likely attract condemnation from some Nigerians.

“The former President Jonathan visited delta militants in the creeks, so also the former vice president Osinbajo. They all came up with a program to tame the militants. Who is going to visit BH and Bandits to tame them without fools castigating them?” Gumi wrote.

The cleric’s comments come against the backdrop of continuing discussions on the most effective strategy for addressing insecurity, particularly the sustained attacks by Boko Haram insurgents and armed bandit groups across parts of northern Nigeria.
