The suspension of the troubled, divisive National Chairman, Julius Abure, has given the Labour Party’s (LP) problem a new dimension.
The LP National Executive Council, or NEC, suspended Abure for falsely posing as the country’s chairman even after the court dismissed him.
Nenadi Usman, the head of the party’s Caretaker Committee, declared his suspension in a statement on Friday.
Abure’s persistent disregard for court orders, according to Nenadi, casts doubt on the Labour Party’s moral character.
Given that Abure’s term as the party’s chairman had long since ended, she urged him to cease posing as such.
The statement said: “After a careful and comprehensive review of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025, the National Executive Council is deeply concerned by the subsequent actions of Barr. Julius Abure, particularly his continued impersonation of the esteemed office of the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
“In the exercise of its constitutional mandate and in strict accordance with the disciplinary provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (As Amended), the NEC, in session, hereby announces the immediate suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from the Labour Party, effective today, the 7th day of May, 2025, in the first instance.
“Mr. Abure is hereby warned to desist from parading himself as the National Chairman of the Labour Party or impersonating the office in any form.
“He should also present himself to anyone as a member of the Labour Party. The apex court of the land has clearly and finally nullified his claim to leadership, and his tenure has long expired by the passage of time.”
This follows the Abure-led faction’s indefinite suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, and four other party members.
The public was informed of their suspension by Umar Farouk Ibrahim, LP National Secretary, on Wednesday.
