NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, General Alexus Grynkewich, has warned against any attack on member countries, insisting that the military alliance is prepared to respond immediately to aggression.
“If attacked, we are ready to fight tonight,” the American general stated on Monday in Poland.
“We know how we will fight if a fight comes to us. And we know we will win,” he said.
Addressing the 2026 Warsaw Security Forum, Grynkewich outlined his “theory of victory,” explaining that NATO’s first objective would be to stop an initial assault and, if the attack continued, “blunt it and prevent enemy advance.”
The military commander stressed that NATO was not seeking to achieve a “strategic defeat” against its adversary. Instead, he said, the alliance’s priority was to deter a potential attack, weaken the opposing forces and their operational capabilities, and prevent them from capturing territory.
Moscow has repeatedly accused European countries of pursuing a “strategic defeat” of Russia through measures such as sanctions packages and by encouraging countries beyond Europe to adopt similar punitive actions.
During the Warsaw forum, NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska joined Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas and Polish Secretary of State at the Defence Ministry, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, in discussions on strengthening Europe’s military capabilities.
Shekerinska described the development of stronger defence systems as a major priority for NATO, emphasising the need to safeguard the alliance’s one billion people.
The former North Macedonian Defence Minister also urged member states to increase their defence spending, calling on them to commit 5 per cent of their gross domestic product annually to the sector.
Shekerinska reaffirmed NATO’s determination to continue supporting Ukraine and criticised Moscow’s alleged hybrid campaign against the alliance.
“The real reason why Russia has opted for this kind of attacks or threats is because they want to undermine our unity,” she said.
