In order to achieve long-lasting peace in the South East, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged the Federal Government to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from custody.

Barr. Monday Ubani, Special Advisor on Legal Matters for Senator Akpabio, made the statement.

Tuesday was the umpteenth time that Kanu, who is being held under the Department of State Services (DSS) custody due to allegations of terrorism, was denied bail.

“Kanu has suffered enough in custody,” Akpabio stated, emphasizing that a political solution to the issue would benefit all sides.

“I have been one of the greatest advocates for the release and political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration,” he said.

“I am of the firm belief that he should be granted bail. I also aired the view that this matter can be politically sorted out by the president. That will be the end of the crisis.”

When asked about Kanu’s assertion that there would be no more insecurity in the southeast two minutes after his release, Ubani responded that people taking advantage of his prolonged confinement to stir up problems would probably stop once he was freed.

“As to whether his release will automatically end all the insecurity crises in the south-east, I can’t say that with every bit of assurance,” he said.

“But I know that there are those who hide under the Nnamdi Kanu incarceration to unleash mayhem on innocent people in the south-east. So, maybe those hiding under his incarceration to cause trouble may cease if he is released.

“I believe he should be released from jail. He has suffered enough. We should be able to give a political solution to the crisis.

“I know that some of the insecurity crises can cease if he is released. But I may not be able to say that if he is out, every insecurity in the region will cease.

“If there is anything that Tinubu should do for the south-eastern region, it is to get Kanu released and probably find a political solution to his incarceration.”
