Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s aide Paul Ibe has urged US President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on dishonest Nigerian politicians.
Ibe told Trump that the US’s support of corruption in Nigeria is causing annoyance.
In order to prevent corruption proceedings from ending up in offshore accounts, Obama tasked US authorities with collaborating with Nigerians.
Ibe was interviewed by The African Settings Exchange Show on their podcast.
Ibe acknowledged that the United States authorities threatened to suspend visas for corrupt Nigerians, but emphasized that this was insufficient and that more work needed to be done.
He said: “Let me tell you what Nigerians expect from the United States government. Right now, as we speak, there is frustration among Nigerians that the US and its institutions are enabling corruption in Nigeria, that’s the concern of a lot of Nigerians.
“Beyond the rhetoric, beyond the issue of trying to impose visa ban we need to see critical actions taken because you see one out of every five black man is a
Nigerian and that’s how important and that is how key Nigeria is all of this process of advancing democracy.
“Nigeria is key and having recognized that, the United States government and its institutions need to work with the Nigerian people in ensuring that all of these proceeds of corruption don’t end up offshore in the
United States, in properties, money laundering and the rest of it.
“They need to do a whole and that is why I’m using this opportunity to call on President Donald Trump who we know to be a very courageous man to put his foot down and ensure that all of these people who are serving Nigerians the shortest end of the stick are brought to book.”
