Governor Monday Okpebholo gave them brand-new SUVs three months after 17 of the 18 legislative leaders who were elected acting chairmen of their respective councils switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to ZINGTIE, the 17 lawmakers who were purportedly supported by the APC government removed their democratically elected council chairman and deputies from office.

ZINGTIE also remembers that on December 17, 2024, the State House of Assembly suspended all 18 elected local government chairmen and their deputies for a period of two months due to allegations of gross misbehavior and insubordination.

The suspension came when Governor Okpebholo petitioned the House on November 16, 2024.

The petition was titled “The 18 Local Government Chairmen’s Insubordination and Gross Misconduct Regarding Their Refusal to Submit Financial Records for Scrutiny.”

Members of the legislative branches of the various councils removed the chairman and deputies before the two-month suspension ended, and legislative leaders took their place as acting chairmen.

On March 17, 2025, the acting chairmen switched to the APC.

Governor Okpebholo has now given them brand-new SUVs as a reward for joining the ruling party three months earlier.

According to Okpebholo, the chairmen received the new SUVs in order to facilitate efficient service delivery.

“I want to thank God for making today possible as chairmen now have the privilege to drive brand new vehicles in the state. New things are beginning to happen in Edo State under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Edo will experience more development even as we compete with Lagos, Abuja, and other states of the federation. The vehicles commissioned today are not for the private use of the local government chairmen but for the development of the people at the grass roots. I will monitor you to ensure the right thing is done.

“I know how much you are receiving in the councils, and we will measure your success rate if it is commensurate with what you are receiving. My administration has not interfered with your funds and resources,” he said.

Lucky Eseigbe, the Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, had earlier stated that the purchase of brand-new SUVs for local government chairmen was the first time in the state’s history.

Eseigbe went on to say that local government chairmen were given brand-new cars so they could do their duties.

According to the ZINGTIE, the only people who were spared from impeachment by the legislative branch were Tom Obaseki, the elected chairman of the Oredo Local Government Area, and his deputy.

However, Dr. Igbinigie Osaheni, the Head of Local Government Administration, is in charge of the council’s operations.
