Two separate fire incidents in Ikorodu and Surulere areas of Lagos State have destroyed goods and property estimated at millions of naira, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has disclosed.

The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incidents in a statement released on Monday.

According to him, the first fire broke out in the early hours of Monday at Adamo Bus Stop in Ikorodu, where a suspected electrical fault caused flames to spread from a hairdressing shop to nearby businesses.

Oke-Osanyintolu said three shops were affected, with goods and other belongings worth millions of naira destroyed in the process.

He explained that emergency personnel from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Imota, were promptly deployed to the scene and succeeded in containing the fire before eventually putting it out completely.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the fire originated from a spark from electrical wiring which ignited the roof of a hairdressing shop and spread to adjoining shops,” he said.

The permanent secretary added that responders conducted dampening-down operations to prevent the fire from starting again, noting that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

Another fire incident was reported later on Monday morning at 19 Olatunde Onimole Street, close to Bakery Bus Stop in Surulere, where two shops were affected.

Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that the businesses dealt in furniture and provisions and were completely gutted, including their contents.

He said the cause of the Surulere fire was yet to be determined, while confirming that no death or injury was recorded in the incident. Responders also carried out dampening-down operations to reduce the risk of a re-ignition.

Meanwhile, LASEMA emergency teams attended to several road-related incidents across Lagos between Sunday and Monday.

The permanent secretary said the agency’s Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa, Oshodi LASEMA Response Unit responded to a truck breakdown at Olupese Bus Stop, inward Cappa, on Sunday afternoon.

The truck, identified by registration number T-12930LA, was reportedly conveying soft drinks when a mechanical failure left it stranded and caused an obstruction on the road.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the response team managed traffic while working alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police to remove the vehicle with LASEMA’s heavy-duty Super Metro equipment.

“The truck was successfully recovered to a lay-by, restoring free flow of traffic,” he said.

On Sunday, the LASEMA LRT Tiger Squad at C3 also responded to a road traffic accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Obalende, involving a yellow commercial bus that overturned after a reported tyre burst.

The bus was later towed to the LASTMA yard at Olowu, while LASEMA paramedics and LASAMBUS personnel provided immediate medical assistance to those affected.

In the early hours of Monday, the LASEMA Alpha Eagle Team also attended to a tanker breakdown along Ilupeju Road, inward Cappa.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the empty tanker, whose registration number was not immediately known, developed a mechanical fault and obstructed traffic along the route.

He disclosed that the tanker was moved to a nearby lay-by with the support of the Nigeria Police and LASEMA’s Super Metro recovery equipment, allowing traffic to return to normal.

The LASEMA permanent secretary praised the emergency responders for their professionalism and effective coordination during the various incidents, particularly LASTMA, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting lives and property through continuous investment in personnel training, modern equipment, and the decentralisation of LASEMA Response Units to ensure a world-class emergency response time,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu also advised residents to properly maintain their vehicles and adhere to electrical safety regulations in order to minimise preventable emergencies.
