The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) chapter, has announced an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Taraba State Government to address its demands concerning staff remuneration and unpaid salary arrears.

The union declared that the industrial action would take effect immediately on October 12, 2026, citing persistent delays by the state government in fulfilling its obligations to university workers.

The chairman of ASUU-TSU, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, announced the decision in a statement, identifying the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement and the settlement of outstanding salary arrears as the union’s principal demands.

The statement explained that the union was seeking the immediate implementation of the remuneration agreement at Taraba State University, as well as the payment of all accumulated salary arrears from January 2026 to date.

The union also demanded the full enforcement of the agreed remuneration structure, insisting that the government must fulfil its commitments to academic staff.

“The union had exercised considerable patience and demonstrated its commitment to dialogue since February 2026, when it began engaging the Taraba State Government over the outstanding issues,” Mbave said.

He stated that the discussions resulted in the formation of a verification committee tasked with examining the existing salary structure and assessing the implementation of the remuneration agreement across the North-East region.

According to the union, the committee completed its assignment and submitted its report on September 24, 2026.

“The union had earlier suspended its planned industrial action following an appeal by the government for additional time through the Office of the Head of Civil Service, in the interest of maintaining industrial harmony,” the chairman added

However, Mbave said the government’s continued failure to implement the agreement, despite the completion of the verification exercise and other necessary procedures, had compelled the union to commence the strike.

ASUU-TSU clarified that the industrial action should not be viewed as a refusal to engage in dialogue, noting that it remained willing to participate in meaningful and constructive discussions with the government and other relevant stakeholders.

The union nevertheless insisted that any further negotiations must be genuine, timely and focused on reaching a clear and lasting resolution.

It urged the Taraba State Government to honour the processes already completed and urgently implement the agreed remuneration framework while settling all outstanding salary arrears.

The statement also appealed to members of the public to recognise that the union’s demands were intended to promote fairness, safeguard the dignity of university workers and ensure compliance with agreements reached in good faith.
