The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he advised Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Rivers State for the 2027 election, to withdraw from the race scheduled for February.
In a video circulating online, Wike described Lulu-Briggs as a friend and disclosed that he had repeatedly encouraged him to step aside in favour of another aspirant, pointing to his age as a major consideration.
According to the minister, Lulu-Briggs has made more than eight attempts to become governor of Rivers State without success. He suggested that the NDC candidate should instead use his resources to support another person seeking the state’s top political office.
“I don’t know the other people contesting in Rivers State, but Dumo has been my friend. I have told him several times, ‘Dumo, how many times will you contest?
“You are approaching 70 years old, and you have contested for governor of Rivers State more than eight times. Take your money and sponsor someone else,” Wike stated.
The FCT minister also expressed optimism that Kingsley Chinda, whom he identified as the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), would win the forthcoming governorship election.
Wike acknowledged in the video that one of the major contenders would eventually emerge as the winner of the contest. However, he emphasised that securing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election remained the primary political objective.
