Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, has said the Strait of Hormuz will only be reopened if the United States agrees to conditions laid down by Tehran, dismissing reports that talks between Iran and Oman could result in the waterway being reopened immediately.

IRGC spokesman, Hossein Mohebbi, quoted by Iran’s Tasnim news agency, said the status of the strategic strait was separate from the ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman.

According to him, any decision to reopen the waterway would be subject to “specific mechanisms and conditions” established by Iran.

The development followed a statement by a US official that negotiations involving Iran and Oman had recorded progress and could soon pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Such a development could help reduce disruptions to global oil supplies caused by restrictions around the strategic waterway.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry had earlier disclosed that Tehran and Muscat were working towards concluding arrangements for the joint management of the vital maritime route.

Iranian authorities have also suggested that reopening the strait could be contingent on the lifting of US restrictions affecting Iranian shipping.
